Q&A From High School Kids to The Experts

Why is cancer a fatal disease?

Cancer is not always fatal. Many people are treated successfully, especially when cancer is found early. It becomes more dangerous if it is discovered late or spreads to other parts of the body.

Can cancer come back after treatment?

Yes. Sometimes cancer returns after treatment. This is called a recurrence. That is why people who have been treated need regular check-ups so doctors can detect any problems early.

What causes cervical cancer?

The main cause of cervical cancer is a long-lasting infection with certain high-risk types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a common virus that is usually spread through sexual contact. In most people, the body clears the virus naturally, but in some people it stays for many years and may eventually lead to cervical cancer.

Does drinking alcohol cause cervical cancer?

No. Alcohol does not directly cause cervical cancer. However, drinking too much alcohol increases the risk of several other types of cancer and can harm your overall health.

If you miss your period, are you at risk of cervical cancer?

No. Missing a period does not mean you have cervical cancer. Periods can be missed for many reasons, including pregnancy, stress, illness, hormonal changes, or changes in body weight.

How does someone get cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer usually develops after a long-term infection with high-risk HPV. It often takes many years for the infection to develop into cancer.

Can endometriosis cause cervical cancer?

No. Endometriosis and cervical cancer are different conditions. Having endometriosis does not cause cervical cancer.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer?

In its early stages, cervical cancer often has no symptoms. As it progresses, a person may experience:

  • Bleeding after sex
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Ongoing pelvic pain or pain during sex

These symptoms do not always mean someone has cervical cancer, but they should be checked by a healthcare provider.

Do painful menstrual cramps cause cancer?

No. Painful menstrual cramps do not cause cancer. They are common and are usually related to normal menstrual changes or other medical conditions.

Does cervical cancer cause painful cramps and heavy periods?

It can sometimes cause pelvic pain and abnormal bleeding. However, heavy or painful periods are much more commonly caused by other conditions. Anyone with unusual or severe symptoms should visit a health facility.

Is amputation necessary for cervical cancer?

No. Cervical cancer does not require amputations. Treatment depends on how advanced the cancer is and may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these.

Can someone die after chemotherapy?

Most people receive chemotherapy safely. Like all medical treatments, it can have side effects, and serious complications are uncommon. Doctors monitor patients carefully throughout treatment.

Is chemotherapy painful?

The chemotherapy medicine itself is usually given through a drip or injection. Apart from the brief discomfort of the needle, the treatment is not usually painful. Some people may experience side effects such as tiredness, nausea, or mouth sores, and healthcare providers can help manage these.

Will I need chemotherapy again after finishing treatment?

Not always. Some people only need one course of treatment. Others may need more treatment if the cancer returns or if their doctor recommends additional therapy.

How can cervical cancer be prevented?

You can lower your risk by:

  • Getting the HPV vaccine before exposure to HPV.
  • Going for regular cervical cancer screening when you reach the recommended screening age.
  • Avoiding smoking.
  • Following up promptly if screening results are abnormal.
  • Practising safer sex, including limiting the number of sexual partners and using condoms. Condoms reduce—but do not completely prevent—the spread of HPV.

If someone has had cervical cancer, how can they reduce the chance of it coming back?

  • Attend all follow-up clinic appointments.
  • Follow the treatment plan recommended by your doctor.
  • Report any new symptoms as soon as possible.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, and avoiding tobacco.

How is cervical cancer screening done?

Screening can be done using:

  • An HPV test to check for high-risk HPV.
  • A Pap smear (Pap test) to look for abnormal cells on the cervix.
  • In some health facilities, Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), where a healthcare provider applies a vinegar-like solution to the cervix and checks for any abnormal areas.

How often should someone be screened?

The timing depends on a person’s age, health, and the type of screening test used. A healthcare provider will recommend the right screening schedule. Most people do not need screening every year.

Does cervical cancer screening have side effects?

Screening is very safe. Some people may feel mild discomfort or notice light spotting afterwards, but this usually goes away quickly.

Will we be screened for cervical cancer after this talk?

That depends on today’s programme. The organisers or healthcare team will let you know if screening is available. Not everyone attending the talk will be eligible for screening, especially younger students.

Is there any relationship between cervical cancer screening and amputation?

No. There is no connection at all. Screening is simply a test to check the cervix for early changes. It does not involve removing any part of the body.

Is it normal to have a period for only one day?

Sometimes, yes. Some people naturally have short periods. If this is a new change or happens often, it is a good idea to visit a healthcare provider.

What should you do if a sanitary pad causes irritation?

If a pad causes itching, a rash, or discomfort:

  • Change your pad regularly.
  • Try a different brand if possible.
  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Visit a health facility if the irritation continues or becomes severe.

Is it normal for menstrual blood to be dark red or maroon at the end of a period?

Yes. This is common and usually means the blood is older and leaving the uterus more slowly.

Is it normal to have a period that lasts more than two weeks?

No. Bleeding for more than two weeks is not considered normal and should be checked by a healthcare provider.

Is it normal to have two periods in one month?

It can happen occasionally, especially in adolescents whose menstrual cycles are still becoming regular. If it happens often or the bleeding is heavy, a medical check-up is recommended.

Is it normal for a period to last one week?

Yes. A menstrual period lasting between 2 and 7 days is generally considered normal.

Are there exercises that can prevent breast cancer?

No exercise can completely prevent breast cancer. However, regular physical activity can lower the risk. Other healthy habits include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight.
  • Eating a balanced diet.
  • Limiting alcohol.
  • Not smoking.
  • Being familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel, and reporting any changes to a healthcare provider.
